My mother, a classically trained singer, claimed I\u2019d sing songs she was practicing while still in my crib\u2014without words, of course. A watercolor and ceramic artist herself, she was my first teacher. One of my earliest memories is of crying to her at a Christmas party because Santa didn\u2019t give me a set of watercolors. The set was soon in my hands, and I still have it.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_66375\" style=\"width: 480px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-66375\" class=\"size-full wp-image-66375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.artsyshark.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/The-Wind-Whispers-8x10_pastel.jpg\" alt=\"pastel landscape painting of a beachfront\" width=\"470\" height=\"366\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-66375\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">&#8220;The Wind Whispers&#8221; pastel, 8&#8243; x 10&#8243;<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In grade three I started violin lessons, eventually earning an honors degree in violin performance. I have been part of many orchestras and chamber music groups, played on a real Stradivari, and performed with orchestras at London\u2019s famed Royal Albert Hall.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_66376\" style=\"width: 357px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-66376\" class=\"size-full wp-image-66376\" src=\"https:\/\/www.artsyshark.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/Fort-Coulonge-Forest-Walk-8x10_pastel.jpg\" alt=\"pastel painting forest landscape\" width=\"347\" height=\"450\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-66376\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">&#8220;Fort Coulonge Forest Walk&#8221; pastel, 8&#8243; x 10&#8243;<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>While I still play violin, now my primary creative pursuit is painting, often plein air, using oils and pastels. Plein air has allowed me to experience the outdoors in a different way. I notice more about the subject than I would otherwise, feel more deeply, and enjoy bringing that feeling to life in my paintings. Usually I paint alla prima, which is Italian for \u201call at once.\u201d I could spend an hour on a painting or six hours.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_66378\" style=\"width: 509px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-66378\" class=\"size-full wp-image-66378\" src=\"https:\/\/www.artsyshark.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/Sunset-Over-The-Marsh_8x10_pastel.jpg\" alt=\"pastel landscape painting of a marsh at sunset\" width=\"499\" height=\"403\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-66378\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">&#8220;Sunset Over the Marsh&#8221; pastel, 8&#8243; x 10&#8243;<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>It took me a while to find my way back to art. Though my love of drawing and painting was always there \u2014 whether I was screen printing T-shirts for friends, using graphic design to make stickers and signage for my father\u2019s business, or creating a comic strip \u2014 decades passed before I started to take it seriously.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_66377\" style=\"width: 388px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-66377\" class=\"size-full wp-image-66377\" src=\"https:\/\/www.artsyshark.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/The-Silent-Vessel-10x8_pastel.jpg\" alt=\"pastel painting of a ship in the water on a moonlit night\" width=\"378\" height=\"500\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-66377\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">&#8220;The Silent Vessel&#8221; pastel, 10&#8243; x 8&#8243;<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>After working as a music typesetter, an accountant, and the manufacturer of meditation cushions and mats, I rekindled my art journey around 2011 when I accompanied my husband Len to local art classes taught by plein air artists. I thrived again, falling in love with oils and the creativity plein air allows.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_66379\" style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-66379\" class=\"size-full wp-image-66379\" src=\"https:\/\/www.artsyshark.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/Red-Rocks-Soft-Splash-8x10_pastel.jpg\" alt=\"pastel landscape painting of ocean crashing on rocks\" width=\"500\" height=\"359\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-66379\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">&#8220;Red Rocks Soft Splash&#8221; pastel, 8&#8243; x 10&#8243;<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Art has brought me a deep sense of peace, complementing my Zen Shikantaza (\u201cjust sitting\u201d) meditation practice. It allows me to connect with my inner self and express what I cannot say in words. It\u2019s like breathing \u2014 when done right you don\u2019t think about what you are doing, you just \u201cdo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_66380\" style=\"width: 407px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-66380\" class=\"size-full wp-image-66380\" src=\"https:\/\/www.artsyshark.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/Electric-Moonlight-10x8_pastel.jpg\" alt=\"pastel painting night landscape with moonlight\" width=\"397\" height=\"500\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-66380\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">&#8220;Electric Moonlight&#8221; pastel, 10&#8243; x 8&#8243;<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Having honed my skills, I\u2019m now busy exhibiting my work. In February, my exhibition <em>Poems in Pastel<\/em> was featured at the Barrie Art Club\u2014oil and pastel paintings and a series of haiku, one for each pastel, inspired by my Shodo (Japanese calligraphy) classes.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_66381\" style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-66381\" class=\"size-full wp-image-66381\" src=\"https:\/\/www.artsyshark.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/Where-the-Ocean-Beckons_8x10_pastel.jpg\" alt=\"pastel ocean scene with a boy holding a bucket\" width=\"500\" height=\"362\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-66381\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">&#8220;Where the Ocean Beckons&#8221; pastel, 8&#8243; x 10&#8243;<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>My solo exhibition <em>From Field to Canvas<\/em> debuted at the Adjala-Tosorontio Municipal Center in Alliston, Ontario, moved to the Museum on the Boyne in Alliston in the spring and is now on display at Matthews House hospice in Alliston. I also have pieces in exhibitions in Toronto and Barrie, Ontario.
